Pot Odds Quick Reference
Pot odds tell you the ratio of what you need to call vs what’s in the pot. Compare pot odds to your drawing odds to decide whether to call.
| Bet Size (as % of pot) | Pot Odds | Required Equity | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25% (quarter pot) | 5:1 | 16.7% | $10 pot, opponent bets $2.50 |
| 33% (third pot) | 4:1 | 20.0% | $10 pot, opponent bets $3.30 |
| 50% (half pot) | 3:1 | 25.0% | $10 pot, opponent bets $5 |
| 66% (two-thirds) | 2.5:1 | 28.6% | $10 pot, opponent bets $6.60 |
| 75% (three-quarter) | 2.3:1 | 30.0% | $10 pot, opponent bets $7.50 |
| 100% (pot-sized) | 2:1 | 33.3% | $10 pot, opponent bets $10 |
| 150% (overbet) | 1.67:1 | 37.5% | $10 pot, opponent bets $15 |
| 200% (double pot) | 1.5:1 | 40.0% | $10 pot, opponent bets $20 |
How to Use Pot Odds
- Count your outs
- Look up your drawing odds in the table above
- Look at the pot odds you’re being offered
- If your drawing odds % is higher than the required equity %, calling is profitable
Example: You have a flush draw (9 outs = 34.9% over two cards). Opponent bets half pot (requires 25% equity). 34.9% > 25% = profitable call!
The Rule of 2 and 4 (Mental Math Shortcut)
Don’t have a chart handy? Use this simple mental math rule:
- On the flop (2 cards to come): Multiply outs by 4
- On the turn (1 card to come): Multiply outs by 2
Examples:
- Flush draw (9 outs) on flop: 9 x 4 = 36% (actual: 34.9%)
- Flush draw (9 outs) on turn: 9 x 2 = 18% (actual: 19.1%)
- Open-ended straight (8 outs) on flop: 8 x 4 = 32% (actual: 31.5%)
- Gutshot (4 outs) on turn: 4 x 2 = 8% (actual: 8.5%)
The rule is slightly optimistic but close enough for in-game decisions. For large outs (15+), use (outs x 4) – (outs – 8) for better accuracy.
Implied Odds
Pot odds only consider what’s currently in the pot. Implied odds factor in what you expect to win on future streets if you hit your draw:
- Good implied odds: Deep stacks, opponent likely to call your bets, hidden draws
- Poor implied odds: Short stacks, opponent likely to fold, obvious draws
Example: You have a gutshot straight draw (4 outs, 8.5% on turn). Pot is $20, opponent bets $10. Pot odds require 25% equity — you only have 8.5%. BUT if you hit, you expect to win $80 more. Total potential: $110 for a $10 call = 11:1. Your drawing odds are 10.75:1. This is now a profitable call!

Quick Decision Framework
When facing a bet with a draw, run through this sequence:
- Count your outs — how many cards improve your hand?
- Calculate your equity — use the Rule of 2 and 4
- Check pot odds — what equity do you need to call?
- Consider implied odds — will you win more if you hit?
- Decide: If equity > required equity, call. If not, fold (or raise as a semi-bluff).
